Even though the Kentucky Derby itself is only a two minutes spectacle, the biggest horse race of the year is celebrated with a month’s worth of entertaining events for adults and children. The Kentucky Derby Event Festival is one of the biggest community extravaganzas in the world and it has been recognized by the International Festivals & Events Association as one of the best festivals in the world.
The festivities begin each year with an Opening Ceremony tradition to kick off the ensuing events. One of the largest fireworks displays in the United States is the annual Thunder Over Louisville. The festival hosts a variety of sports and music for many tastes. In total, the festival hosts over 70 events leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
The premier event which kickstarted the tradition is the Pegasus Parade which treks through Broadway in Louisville. The number of highlights for the community of Louisville and those who travel from out of town to participate continues to increase. A half and full marathon, hot-air balloon events, and The Great Steamboat Race on the Ohio River are just a handful of the spectacular events that make the Kentucky Derby Event Festival such an amazing experience for all ages.
In addition to nonstop entertainment, there is an assortment of food and beverages available at every turn. Chow Wagon and Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville are only a couple of attractions where many top-notch food vendors set up shop at the festival to provide savory treats.
Throughout the month-long party, the majority of the events are free of charge. The friendly gathering generates millions of dollars in revenue which stimulates the economy of Louisville and surrounding areas. Best of all, a tremendous amount of funds gathered go directly to local charities.
The official beginning of the Kentucky Derby 2020 Event Festival is the Academic Challenge held on March 23rd. The best and brightest elementary school students in the area will compete against each other by answering questions in all categories of academia. The annual Thunder Over Louisville is scheduled to take place along Waterfront Park on April 30th.
